In medical contexts, transillumination is often employed in pediatric care, particularly for assessing conditions such as pneumothorax (collapsed lung) or intestinal obstruction. A bright light source, such as a penlight or transilluminator, is placed against the skin, and the examiner observes the transmission of light through the body. For example, in a pneumothorax, air in the pleural space may cause a distinct shadowing effect, distinguishing it from surrounding tissues. Similarly, it can help detect fluid levels in the abdomen or chest, such as in cases of ascites or pleural effusion.

The technique is also used in dentistry to examine the integrity of teeth and gums, particularly in identifying cavities or areas of decay that may not be visible externally. In industrial settings, transillumination can be applied to inspect materials like plastics, composites, or glass for internal defects, cracks, or inconsistencies.

While transillumination is a simple and non-invasive method, its effectiveness depends on the translucency of the material being examined. It is generally limited to superficial structures and is not suitable for deep or highly opaque tissues. The technique requires proper lighting conditions and trained observation to yield accurate results. False positives or negatives can occur if the examiner lacks experience or if the patient’s anatomy complicates visualization.
