Traktorer are motorized vehicles designed primarily to provide high torque at low speeds to power agricultural and other heavy implements. Most tractors are equipped with a rear and sometimes front hitch, called a three-point hitch, and a power take-off (PTO) shaft to transmit engine power to attached equipment. They vary widely in size, from compact garden tractors to large agricultural machines used on commercial farms.

The development of tractors began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with steam traction engines, later replaced by internal combustion engines. The introduction of the three-point hitch in the 1920s, largely driven by Harry Ferguson, revolutionized implement use by allowing easy coupling, stability, and safe lifting of implements.

Modern tractors come in several drive configurations, including two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. Engine power ranges from a few horsepower for small compact models to several hundred horsepower for large farming tractors. Transmissions can be manual, semi-automatic, or hydrostatic. Standard features often include hydraulic systems, an independent PTO, hydraulic three-point hitch, and, in many models, a rollover protective structure (ROPS) and seat belt for safety.

Uses encompass field work such as plowing, planting, and harvesting, as well as mowing, soil preparation, and irrigation. Attachments like plows, discs, seed drills, mowers, front-end loaders, backhoes, and balers expand a tractor’s capability. In landscaping, forestry, and light construction, tractors perform similar tasks with appropriate implements.

Safety and regulation emphasize operator training and the use of protective equipment. ROPS and seat belts are common safety features, and many regions require training or licensing for powered machinery. Emissions standards (for example EU Stage V) regulate exhaust, while routine maintenance and tire safety reduce accident risk.

In modern agriculture, tractors are often equipped with precision technologies, including GPS guidance, yield monitoring, and variable-rate application, to improve efficiency and resource management.
