Torwart is the position in football (soccer) responsible for defending the team's goal. In German-speaking contexts the term corresponds to the goalkeeper or goalie in English. The Torwart is the only player on the field who may handle the ball with his hands, but only within the team's own penalty area. The primary objective is to prevent the opposing team from scoring by stopping shots, catching or punching crosses, and organizing the defense.

Beyond shot-stopping, a goalkeeper contributes to team play through distribution and decision-making. They distribute the ball by throwing, kicking, or rolling it to teammates to initiate attacks or maintain possession. Positioning, reading the game, and communication with defenders are essential skills. Modern goalkeepers often take on additional responsibilities near the edge of the penalty area, acting as a “sweeper-keeper” by stepping off the line to intercept through-passes or clearances.

Equipment and training: goalkeepers wear gloves designed for grip and protection, a distinctive jersey and shorts, and standard protective gear such as shin guards. Training emphasizes reflexes, agility, aerial prowess, shot-stopping technique, and precise ball distribution.
