toreu

Toreu is a village in Onemahi Hills, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. It is one of the sub-districts of the Kelelea sub-district in the Kepulauan Tanimbar Regency. The village has a population of approximately 240 people and consists of 45 households. The villagers mainly engage in subsistence farming, planting crops such as cassava, and hunting for wild birds and monkeys. The terrain is generally sloping with lush vegetation.

The Toreu Village has a single road that connects it to the surrounding villages. Overlanding and long-distance voyages typically require experienced guides due to the unforgiving terrain and unpredictable weather conditions. Infrastructure development has been minimal in the village, and basic necessities like electricity, clean water, and regular communication are scarce.

Toreu village lacks paved roads, and the transportation system relies heavily on motorcycles and bicycles. Outlets for essential goods are available on rare occasions, while medical facilities are not readily available. The scarcity of local goods is amplified, and convenience goods require trips to more urban areas. Many aspects of life, especially at home, are characterized by manual labor and resourcefulness.

Its isolation and small population often force villager families to explore more bordered routes like overlanding, establishing alliances, and performing tribal rituals or kin activities for common societal good and benefit. Overall, the village maintains a relatively significant culture characteristic of West Timor norms and conventions.
