Toppmælingar is a term used in Icelandic and certain Nordic contexts to describe measurements of the terrain’s surface and its topographic features. In surveying, geology, geography, and civil engineering, toppmælingar cover elevations, contours, slope, aspect, and surface roughness, with the aim of representing the landscape accurately in maps and spatial databases. The resulting data underpin topographic maps, digital elevation models, and other geographic information system (GIS) datasets.

Measurements are gathered through a range of field and remote sensing techniques. Traditional surveys combine GNSS positioning, optical instruments such as theodolites or total stations, and differential levelling to establish precise horizontal and vertical coordinates. Modern practice frequently employs aerial LiDAR, photogrammetry from drones or aircraft, and satellite or airborne radar and optical sensors to capture large areas efficiently. Data from these methods are processed to produce elevation grids, contour lines, breaklines, and derived products like slope and aspect layers.

Accuracy and reference systems are central to toppmælingar. Elevation is usually referenced to a vertical datum (for example orthometric height relative to mean sea level) or ellipsoidal height, with horizontal coordinates tied to a chosen geodetic datum. Quality is expressed through accuracy metrics such as RMSE or confidence intervals and is influenced by data density, terrain complexity, and processing workflows.

Applications of toppmælingar include infrastructure planning and design, flood risk assessment, urban and regional planning, environmental monitoring, and geomorphological studies. The data are typically stored in GIS formats and elevation models (for example DEMs and LAS/LAZ point clouds), accompanied by metadata that documents methods, datums, and accuracy. Standards and interoperability are supported by regional and international efforts to harmonize geographic information.
