Toonniveau is a term used in Dutch-language media critique and design discourse to describe the relative degree of cartoonish stylization in visual media such as animation, comics, and illustration. The concept marks a spectrum from highly toon-like appearances to more realistic renderings. A high toonniveau is characterized by bold outlines, simplified or exaggerated anatomy, flat shading, and bright, saturated colors; a low toonniveau features more nuanced shading, accurate proportions, textures, and subtler color palettes.
