Tomografias, also known as tomographic scans or simply tomography, are advanced medical imaging techniques used to visualize the internal structures of the body. The term "tomography" derives from the Greek words "tomos" meaning slice or section and "graphein" meaning to write or record. This refers to the fundamental principle behind these imaging methods: the creation of cross-sectional images, or slices, of the body.

Different types of tomography utilize various physical principles to generate these images. Computed tomography (CT) uses X-rays and a computer to reconstruct detailed cross-sectional images. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) employs strong magnetic fields and radio waves to achieve similar results, offering excellent soft tissue contrast. Positron emission tomography (PET) utilizes radioactive tracers to detect metabolic activity within tissues, often used in oncology and neurology.

The process typically involves the patient remaining still while the imaging device rotates around them or directs energy beams. This data is then processed by sophisticated computer algorithms to create a series of two-dimensional slices. These slices can then be viewed individually or stacked by software to reconstruct three-dimensional models of the examined anatomy. Tomografias are invaluable diagnostic tools, aiding physicians in identifying diseases, monitoring treatment effectiveness, and planning surgical procedures with greater precision. They provide information that is often not obtainable through conventional two-dimensional imaging methods like standard X-rays.
