Tombstoning is the act of jumping or diving into water from a height, typically from a rock ledge, cliff, pier, or other elevated structure that can resemble a tombstone. The term is most commonly used in coastal areas and in places where natural or built heights overlook open water. Jumps can vary from moderate to very high, and participants may misjudge depth, water conditions, or submerged hazards.

Common settings include sea cliffs, rocky outcrops, quays, bridges, and abandoned structures near water. Jumps are often performed quickly and without preparation, sometimes after watching others. While some people seek the thrill or photograph opportunities, tombstoning carries significant danger, including the possibility of striking underwater rocks, hitting the water surface at a dangerous angle, or becoming entangled in submerged obstacles.

The principal risks are severe injuries and drowning. Spinal injuries, head trauma, broken bones, and spinal cord damage can result from impacting shallow water or hidden rocks.
