Key concepts include events, which are sets of possible outcomes, and probability, a numerical measure assigned to the likelihood of an event. Probabilities range from 0, indicating an impossible event, to 1, indicating a certain event. The sum of probabilities of all possible outcomes in an experiment must equal 1.

The theory distinguishes between theoretical probability, derived from logical reasoning and the properties of the experiment (e.g., the probability of rolling a specific number on a fair die), and empirical probability, which is based on observed frequencies from repeated trials.

Random variables are central to probability theory. These are functions that assign numerical values to the outcomes of a random experiment.
