Tjärtäckta is a Swedish term that translates to "tar-covered" or "tarred" in English. It most commonly refers to a historical method of treating wooden structures, particularly boats and buildings, with tar to protect them from the elements.

Historically, pine tar, a byproduct of wood distillation, was widely used as a preservative for wood. The process involved coating the wood with hot tar, which would seep into the pores and harden, creating a waterproof and rot-resistant barrier. This was particularly important for ships and boats, where exposure to water and saltwater could cause significant damage. Buildings, especially those in coastal or damp regions, also benefited from tar treatment to extend their lifespan.

The application of tar was a labor-intensive process. The tar was heated, often over an open fire, to a liquid state and then brushed or smeared onto the wooden surfaces. This was typically done during warmer months when the tar would flow more easily. The characteristic black or dark brown color of tar-covered objects became a common sight in many historical settlements.

While effective, tar treatment was not without its drawbacks. Tar has a strong odor and can be sticky to the touch. Over time, the tar coating would need to be reapplied as it weathered and degraded. In modern times, synthetic preservatives and paints have largely replaced traditional tar coatings for most applications due to their ease of use, durability, and less pungent aroma.
