tissuecontext (often written as "tissue context") refers to the local biological environment in which cells, extracellular matrix, and signaling molecules interact within a tissue. The term emphasizes spatial relationships, cellular composition, mechanical properties, and biochemical gradients that collectively influence cell behavior, function, and fate. Recognizing tissuecontext is central to understanding how the same cell types can behave differently depending on their surroundings.

Studying tissuecontext integrates multiple experimental and computational approaches. Histology and immunostaining provide morphological and molecular localization; advanced imaging modalities (confocal, multiphoton, electron microscopy) reveal structural detail; spatial transcriptomics and proteomics map gene and protein expression with positional information; and single-cell sequencing combined with spatial mapping links cell identity to location. Computational modeling and image analysis are used to quantify neighborhoods, signaling fields, and cell–cell interactions.
