Tirthankaraksi are important figures in Jainism. The term "Tirthankara" literally translates to "ford-maker" in Sanskrit, and refers to a human who has conquered the cycle of birth and death and then serves as a teacher to help others cross over from the ocean of suffering to enlightenment. There are 24 Tirthankaras in each cosmic age, both in the ascending and descending phases. Lord Rishabhanatha is considered the first Tirthankara of the current descending half-cycle, known as the Avasharpini. Lord Mahavira is the 24th and last Tirthankara of this age.
