Tirthankaraksi are important figures in Jainism. The term "Tirthankara" literally translates to "ford-maker" in Sanskrit, and refers to a human who has conquered the cycle of birth and death and then serves as a teacher to help others cross over from the ocean of suffering to enlightenment. There are 24 Tirthankaras in each cosmic age, both in the ascending and descending phases. Lord Rishabhanatha is considered the first Tirthankara of the current descending half-cycle, known as the Avasharpini. Lord Mahavira is the 24th and last Tirthankara of this age.

Each Tirthankara has a distinctive symbol, color, and a tree associated with them. For instance, Lord Rishabhanatha's symbol is a bull, his color is golden, and his associated tree is the Nyagrodha. Lord Mahavira's symbol is a lion, his color is golden, and his associated tree is the Plaksha. The Tirthankaras are not considered gods or divine beings who create or control the universe. Instead, they are revered as exemplars of spiritual perfection and guides on the path to liberation (moksha). Their teachings form the basis of Jain philosophy and practice, emphasizing principles like ahimsa (non-violence), satya (truthfulness), asteya (non-stealing), brahmacharya (chastity), and aparigraha (non-possession). Devotees strive to follow their path to attain their own spiritual freedom.
