Tirant, more fully Tirant lo Blanch (Tirant the White), is a late medieval Catalan chivalric romance. It is regarded as one of the most important works of Catalan literature and is frequently cited as an early example of a modern novel due to its narrative realism, character development, and complex political plots.

It was written in the Crown of Aragon region by Joanot Martorell, a Valencian knight, in the mid-15th century. The manuscript circulated in manuscript form and was first printed in Valencia in 1490. The work was later translated into several languages and influenced a range of European writers, including Cervantes.

The story follows Tirant, a skilled knight-errant, as he travels widely, serves in the Byzantine Empire, and engages in battles, diplomacy, and court intrigue. He wins fame for military prowess and is intertwined with romance, most notably his marriage to a Byzantine princess named Carmesina. The narrative interweaves action with practical details of siegecraft, logistics, and governance.

Scholars highlight its realism, political candor, and sophisticated structure, which diverge from conventional romance through its recognition of political and social complexity.
