Timekeepers are devices or individuals that measure, record, or regulate time. In everyday use, a timekeeper often means a clock or watch, but the term can also describe official timekeepers who synchronize events, sports, or ceremonies. Timekeeping combines science, engineering, and standards to produce consistent measures of time.

Ancient timekeepers relied on natural or observable cycles. Sundials used the sun’s shadow; water clocks (clepsydras) measured flow of liquid. Medieval Europe saw the development of mechanical clocks with gears and escapements, enabling more accurate and portable timekeeping. The invention of the pendulum clock in the 17th century dramatically improved accuracy, and spring-driven mechanisms allowed small portable watches.

In the 20th century, electronic and quartz technologies further improved precision. Quartz oscillators provide stable frequencies, while atomic clocks achieve unprecedented accuracy based on atomic transitions. Today, several international time scales exist; the SI second is defined by cesium-133, and Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) harmonizes atomic time with Earth's rotation. International Atomic Time (TAI) runs continuously as a theoretical time scale, with occasional leap seconds inserted into UTC.

Modern timekeeping supports global infrastructure: GPS and other satellite systems rely on onboard atomic clocks; data networks use time protocols; finance and telecommunications require synchronized clocks. Consumer devices—watches, clocks, and smartphones—provide local time derived from these standards.
