Tiltrykksteknikker, also known as pressure printing techniques, encompass a range of printmaking methods where ink is transferred to paper by applying pressure. This fundamental principle distinguishes them from other printmaking categories like relief printing (where ink is applied to raised areas) or intaglio printing (where ink is held in incised lines).

The most common and widely recognized tiltrykksteknikk is lithography. In traditional planographic lithography, the image is drawn on a flat stone or metal plate using a greasy substance. Ink adheres to the greasy areas and is repelled by the water applied to the rest of the plate. When paper is pressed against the inked plate, the ink is transferred to the paper, creating the print.

Another significant tiltrykksteknikk is screen printing, also known as serigraphy. Here, ink is forced through a mesh screen onto the printing surface. A stencil is used to block off certain areas of the screen, allowing ink to pass through only where the image is intended to be printed. Pressure is applied to push the ink through the open areas of the mesh.

Offset lithography is a variation of lithography widely used in commercial printing. Instead of transferring ink directly from the plate to the paper, the image is first transferred to a rubber blanket cylinder, which then offsets the image onto the paper. This method allows for high-volume printing and is known for its sharpness and detail. All these techniques rely on the controlled application of pressure to achieve a printed image.
