The term denotes masonry units that combine features of bricks and stone, produced to resemble natural stone while retaining the handling advantages of brickwork. Tiilikivi has been used for exterior walls, basement facings, and sometimes garden pavements or decorative façades.

Manufacture and forms of tiilikivi vary. Some units are fired clay blocks whose faces are finished to imitate stone textures, while others are cementitious blocks containing brick fragments or aggregates to achieve a stone-like appearance.
