Maintenance and lifecycle: After opening, roads require ongoing maintenance, including resurfacing, rut filling, crack sealing, and structural strengthening. Winter maintenance and drainage upkeep are common in many climates. Life-cycle cost assessment informs timing of rehabilitation or replacement.

Regulation and impact: Road projects must comply with environmental legislation, noise and air quality standards, and land-use planning rules. Environmental and social considerations, such as habitat protection, noise barriers, and affected communities, are increasingly integrated into planning and design.
