Etymology and origins are attributed in the fiction to a local language of a central archipelago, with the name commonly interpreted as combining elements meaning three and duty or task. In some narratives, threytu emerges from early exchanges between communities, gradually formalizing into a recognized cycle that binds kin groups and guilds through shared obligation.

Core concepts describe a threefold partition of labor and authority. The triad usually comprises a maker who creates offerings or tools, a mediator who coordinates agreements and resolves conflicts, and a guardian who maintains memory, enforces customary law, and protects lineage rights. The three roles are interdependent: makers supply form, mediators ensure process, and guardians preserve legitimacy over time.

Ritual practice centers on a three-phase cycle: preparation, enactment, and reconciliation. Ceremonies feature three artifacts, a three-part oath, and a communal feast that symbolizes reciprocal obligation. Symbolic motifs often employ triadic colors, three songs, and tripartite architectural or geographic cues such as coast, land, and sky.
