Thermografen is a term used to describe devices and practitioners associated with thermography, the measurement and visualization of temperature patterns. In a broad sense it can refer to a thermograph, an instrument that records temperature changes over time, or to the field of thermography that uses infrared imaging to reveal temperature distributions on surfaces.

Historically, a thermograf or thermograph recorded temperature with sensors connected to a recording mechanism, such as a pen tracing on rotating paper. Modern versions rely on electronic sensors and digital data logging, offering continuous or automated temperature monitoring and easy data analysis.

In contemporary practice, infrared thermography is a central method. An infrared camera detects heat energy emitted by objects, converts it into a digital image, and produces a thermogram where colors or shades indicate temperature differences. Accuracy depends on factors such as surface emissivity, distance to the target, viewing angle, and environmental conditions. Proper calibration and understanding of material properties are essential for meaningful interpretation.

Applications of thermography include industrial monitoring of electrical equipment, mechanical systems, and electrical panels to identify overheating or faults. Building diagnostics use thermography to detect insulation gaps, air leaks, and moisture intrusion. In medicine and veterinary science, infrared thermography is used as a noninvasive supplementary tool to observe temperature patterns, though it is not a stand-alone diagnostic method. In research, thermography helps study heat transfer and thermal behavior in experiments.

Limitations include that thermograms reflect surface temperatures rather than internal conditions, and readings must be interpreted within context and with appropriate expertise.
