Teststärke refers to the probability that a statistical test will correctly reject a false null hypothesis. In simpler terms, it's the power of a test to detect a real effect if one exists. A test with high power is more likely to find a statistically significant result when there is a true difference or relationship in the data. Conversely, a test with low power might fail to detect a real effect, leading to a false negative.

Several factors influence teststärke. The significance level (alpha) plays a role; a higher alpha (e.g., 0.10 instead of 0.05) increases power but also increases the risk of a Type I error (false positive). The effect size, which is the magnitude of the difference or relationship being studied, is crucial. Larger effect sizes are easier to detect, thus increasing power. Sample size is another key determinant. Larger sample sizes provide more information and generally lead to higher power.

Researchers aim for adequate teststärke in their studies to ensure that if a real phenomenon is present, their experiment will have a good chance of detecting it. Low teststärke can lead to the conclusion that there is no effect when, in reality, one exists but was too small to be detected with the given study design. This is particularly problematic in fields where resources are limited, and failing to detect a real effect can have significant consequences. Power analysis is often conducted before a study begins to determine the necessary sample size to achieve a desired level of teststärke.
