Its primary design is to be scattered on the ground to impede the movement of enemies, particularly those on foot or horseback. The characteristic feature of a teräspiikeestä is its multiple sharp points, typically four, so that no matter how it lands, at least one point will face upwards. This ensures that any person or animal stepping on it will be impaled.
