Teräspiikeestä

Teräspiikeestä, often translated as steel spikes or caltrops in English, refers to a type of anti-personnel or anti-cavalry weapon. Its primary design is to be scattered on the ground to impede the movement of enemies, particularly those on foot or horseback. The characteristic feature of a teräspiikeestä is its multiple sharp points, typically four, so that no matter how it lands, at least one point will face upwards. This ensures that any person or animal stepping on it will be impaled.

Historically, teräspiikeestä have been employed in warfare for centuries. Their effectiveness lies in their ability to create difficult or impassable terrain for advancing forces. They were particularly useful in defensive situations, where they could be deployed to slow down or stop an enemy charge, forcing them to either dismount, carefully navigate the spikes, or suffer casualties. The term itself originates from Finnish, combining "teräs" (steel) and "piikki" (spike).

While their military use has diminished with modern warfare and the development of different tactics, the concept of caltrops or similar spike-scattering devices still appears in various contexts. In some regions, they are still used in civilian settings as a deterrent against trespassers or as a means of riot control. However, their use can be controversial due to their indiscriminate nature and potential for causing serious injury.
