Terrassed is an adjective describing land or a structure that has been laid out or modified to include terraces—flat, stepped surfaces carved into a slope to create arable land, usable space, or architectural features. The term is most often used in landscape description, archaeology, and historical geography to convey the presence of such stepped platforms.

Construction of terrassed landscapes typically involves creating a series of horizontal or gently sloping terraces supported by retaining walls, which may be built from stone, earth, or rubble. Drainage channels and irrigation systems are commonly integrated to manage water, reduce erosion, and maintain soil fertility. Terracing is especially prevalent on hillsides where the natural terrain is steep and farming would otherwise be impractical.

In modern usage, terrassed is less common than terraced or terracing, but it shares the same meaning. The form may appear in older texts or in descriptive writing to indicate that a site has been transformed into terraces.

Examples of terrassed landscapes include agricultural terraces in the Andes and Southeast Asia, as well as ornamental terraced gardens in historic estates. Terracing remains a widely used technique in soil conservation, land rehabilitation, and landscape architecture, both for agricultural productivity and to enhance visual and cultural value.
