Termogénesis is the process by which living organisms produce heat. This heat generation is crucial for maintaining a stable internal body temperature, a process known as thermoregulation. In endothermic animals, like mammals and birds, termogénesis is a continuous and vital function. It allows them to survive in environments with varying temperatures.

There are several mechanisms for termogénesis. The most common is metabolic termogénesis, which involves the biochemical reactions occurring within cells. During metabolism, energy is released from the breakdown of food, and a portion of this energy is converted into heat. Shivering thermogenesis is another important mechanism, involving involuntary muscle contractions that generate heat. This is often observed when an animal is cold.

Non-shivering thermogenesis is particularly significant in certain animals, such as newborns and hibernating mammals. This process primarily occurs in brown adipose tissue (BAT), also known as brown fat. Brown fat cells contain a high concentration of mitochondria, which are specialized organelles that can uncouple the process of cellular respiration to directly produce heat instead of ATP. Hormones like norepinephrine play a key role in stimulating this type of heat production.

In contrast, ectothermic organisms, such as reptiles and amphibians, rely primarily on external sources of heat to regulate their body temperature. They may bask in the sun or seek shade to achieve their desired thermal range. While they do produce some metabolic heat, it is generally insufficient to maintain a constant internal temperature independently of their environment.
