Terméketlenséget, often translated as infertility, refers to the inability of a person or couple to conceive a child after a period of regular, unprotected intercourse. This is typically defined as one year for couples where the woman is under 35, and six months for couples where the woman is 35 or older. Infertility can stem from a variety of factors affecting either the male partner, the female partner, or both.

Infertility in women can be caused by ovulation disorders, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or hormonal imbalances. Blocked fallopian tubes, which prevent the egg from reaching the uterus or sperm from reaching the egg, are another common cause. Conditions affecting the uterus, like fibroids or endometriosis, can also interfere with implantation. Age is a significant factor, as egg quality and quantity decline with age.

Male infertility can be due to problems with sperm production, such as low sperm count, poor sperm motility (movement), or abnormal sperm morphology (shape). Blockages in the reproductive tract can also prevent sperm from being ejaculated. Hormonal imbalances and genetic factors can also contribute to male infertility. In some cases, the cause of infertility remains unexplained, even after thorough investigation.

Diagnosis of infertility usually involves a comprehensive medical history, physical examinations, and various tests for both partners. These tests may include hormone level checks, semen analysis, ovulation tracking, and imaging of the reproductive organs. Treatment options vary widely depending on the underlying cause and may include lifestyle changes, medication to stimulate ovulation, surgical procedures, or assisted reproductive technologies like in vitro fertilization (IVF).
