The tenyō was a type of *kosode*, an early form of the kimono, characterized by its long, wide sleeves and loose fit. It was typically made from luxurious fabrics such as silk, often adorned with intricate embroidery, gold thread, or delicate patterns. These garments were worn by noblewomen, courtesans, and high-ranking samurai wives, symbolizing status and sophistication. The tenyō was often paired with a *obi* (sash) tied in elaborate styles to accentuate its grandeur.
