Tempraturvask is a term used to describe the practice of washing laundry at a specific water temperature with the aim of balancing cleaning effectiveness, fabric care, and energy use. The concept is applied in both household laundries and professional facilities, where wash temperature is chosen based on fabric type, soil level, and sanitation needs.

The temperature of the wash influences a detergent’s effectiveness, the activity of enzymes in enzyme-based detergents, and the solubility of soils. Higher temperatures generally improve removal of certain stains and provide greater microbial reduction, but can also cause color fading, shrinking, or fiber damage in delicate textiles. Lower temperatures save energy and are gentler on fabrics, but may require longer cycles or pre-treatment for stubborn soils.

Common guidelines advise different temperatures for different items. Cotton and heavily soiled whites are often washed at 60°C or higher to enhance sanitation, while everyday colored fabrics are typically washed at 30–40°C to protect colors. Delicate items such as wool or silk usually require cold to around 30°C and gentle cycles. In professional settings, sanitation requirements may mandate higher temperatures or the use of chemical sanitizers, depending on industry standards and local regulations.

A key consideration is energy efficiency. Heating water accounts for a large portion of a washing cycle’s energy use, so modern detergents and machines enable effective cold or warm washes with shorter cycle times. Care labels and pre-treatment of stains remain important, as they can reduce the need for high-temperature washing.
