These assemblies served as both judicial and legislative bodies, where freeholders, or *þingmenn* (assembly members), would convene to discuss and decide on matters of law, taxation, and communal affairs.

In Iceland, the Alþingi (Althing), established in 930 AD, is one of the oldest surviving parliamentary institutions in the world. It operated as a national assembly where chieftains and freeholders gathered annually to settle disputes, pass laws, and elect leaders. Similar assemblies existed in the Faroe Islands, where the Løgting, founded in 825 AD, remains the national parliament today. In Norway, regional teltings were local gatherings that functioned alongside the national assembly, addressing issues specific to their districts.
