The term appears in languages such as Polish, German, and several other European languages, with equivalent forms in English as telephone operator or switchboard operator.

Historically, telefonists worked at centralized exchanges, using a panel of jacks and cords to establish physical connections between callers. The job required good auditory perception, precise manual dexterity, clear speech, and the ability to multitask under pressure. Operators guided callers to the correct extension, assisted with directory inquiries, and managed messages. The advent of automatic switching and digital networks reduced the need for traditional switchboard operators, transforming the role rather than eliminating it.

In contemporary contexts, similar duties persist in call centers and customer service environments. Modern telefonists or operators answer inbound calls, route inquiries to appropriate departments, provide information, and log interactions. They may use computer-based systems to access directories, record messages, and document problems or requests.
