Tasapainoaisti, also known as the vestibular sense, is one of the body's sensory systems responsible for providing information about motion, head position, and spatial orientation. This sense is crucial for maintaining balance, coordinating movements, and stabilizing gaze. The primary organs of the vestibular system are located in the inner ear, specifically within the labyrinth. These include the semicircular canals and the otolith organs (utricle and saccule).

The three semicircular canals are oriented at approximately right angles to each other, allowing them to detect rotational movements of the head in three different planes: horizontal, sagittal, and coronal. Within these canals are fluid-filled spaces and specialized hair cells that bend in response to the movement of the fluid, sending signals to the brain. The otolith organs, the utricle and saccule, contain calcium carbonate crystals called otoliths that rest on a gelatinous membrane. When the head is tilted or experiences linear acceleration (moving forward, backward, up, or down), these crystals shift, bending the underlying hair cells and signaling changes in position and acceleration.

Information from the vestibular system is transmitted via the vestibular nerve to various parts of the brain, including the brainstem, cerebellum, and cerebral cortex. This sensory input is integrated with information from other senses, such as vision and proprioception (the sense of the relative position of one's own parts of the body and strength of effort being employed in movement), to create a coherent perception of the body's position in space and to control posture and movement. Dysfunction of the vestibular system can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, and nausea.
