Target value, sometimes written as targetvalue in programming or configuration contexts, is a general concept used to denote the value that a system, process, or analysis is intended to reach. It functions as a reference or setpoint, guiding measurements, control logic, and decision rules. The precise meaning of target value varies by domain but commonly contrasts with the actual or observed value.

In measurement and calibration, the target value serves as the reference against which a device is calibrated or validated. Instruments generate readings that are compared to the target, and tolerance ranges define acceptable deviation from that target.

In control systems and automation, the target value is often called the setpoint. The control loop seeks to minimize the error between the measured process variable and the target value by adjusting actuators or inputs accordingly.

In data validation, software configuration, and modeling, a targetValue parameter may specify the desired or expected result. It can be used to drive test cases, data transformations, or optimization objectives, and may appear in APIs, configuration files, or modeling scripts.

In optimization and statistics, the target value can function as an objective to minimize or as a constraint to satisfy. Problems may aim to minimize the deviation from the target value or to achieve a predefined performance threshold.
