Tapeet is a decorative wall covering, typically referred to as wallpaper in many languages. It is used to add color, pattern, texture, and sometimes insulation to interior walls. Wallpaper has ancient roots in decorative papers and textiles, but modern production began in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries, making a wide range of designs available to households.

Modern tapeet uses several substrates: paper, vinyl-coated paper, vinyl, non-woven, and natural options such as grasscloth. Paper is inexpensive and breathable but less durable in moisture. Vinyl and vinyl-coated wallpapers are washable and durable, suitable for wet areas. Non-woven types install and peel more easily. Finishes include embossed textures, metallics, and a range of patterns.

Installation and removal: Adhesive is applied either to the wall or to the wallpaper, depending on the product. Pieces are cut to size, aligned for pattern repeats, and pressed smooth at the seams. Removal varies by type; paper can be soaked and peeled, while vinyl and non-woven products may require scoring or steaming. Maintenance depends on the material; washable vinyls can be wiped, while paper requires gentler cleaning.

Today, tapeet is used for feature walls or entire rooms, with trends favoring textures, soft palettes, and sustainable materials. Environmental considerations include low-VOC adhesives and recycled content.
