Tantalum is a chemical element with the symbol Ta and atomic number 73. It is a hard, blue-gray, dense transition metal belonging to the group of refractory metals. Tantalum exhibits exceptional resistance to corrosion because of a thin, stable oxide film that forms on its surface. It has a very high melting point around 3,017 degrees Celsius and remains strong at elevated temperatures. The metal is ductile and can be drawn into wires and formed into various shapes.

Tantalum occurs naturally in a limited number of rare minerals, most notably tantalite and the coltan ore group (columbite–tantalite). It commonly coexists with niobium and is mined from ore concentrates. Refining tantalum from ore involves separating it from niobium and other elements, followed by reduction to produce metallic tantalum, which is then fabricated into ingots, powders, or compounds.

Discovery and naming: Tantalum was identified as a new element in 1802 by Swedish chemist Anders Ekeberg, who named it after the Greek mythological figure Tantalus. The element was later isolated in metallic form in the 19th century as purification methods improved.

Applications: The most widespread use of tantalum is in solid-state capacitors in electronic devices, where Ta2O5 provides a stable dielectric layer. Tantalum is also used in specialized alloys to improve strength and high-temperature performance, and in chemical processing equipment due to its corrosion resistance. Medical implants and surgical instruments also take advantage of its biocompatibility and corrosion resistance.

Safety and environment: Tantalum is considered to have low toxicity and is not known to play a biological role in humans. However, mining and trade of tantalum, particularly from conflict-affected regions, raise supply-chain and ethical concerns that are often addressed through certification schemes.
