Tannverk is the term used in Norwegian to describe toothache, a common dental symptom characterized by pain in a tooth or the surrounding gums. It is a sign of an underlying condition rather than a disease in itself.

The causes of tannverk are diverse. Dental caries (cavities), pulpitis, gum disease, a cracked tooth, tooth grinding, dental abscess, or trauma can all produce tooth pain. Sometimes pain is referred from nearby structures such as the sinuses.

Typical symptoms include a persistent or intermittent toothache, sensitivity to hot or cold, pain when biting, and swelling or redness around the affected area. Severe or spreading pain, fever, or swelling may indicate an infection and requires prompt care.

Diagnosis usually involves a dental examination, percussion tests, and imaging such as X-rays to identify decay, cracks, or abscesses. Vitality tests may assess the tooth’s nerve status. In some cases differential diagnosis is needed for non-dental causes.

Treatment depends on the cause. Pain relief with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or acetaminophen is common while awaiting treatment. Dental procedures may include fillings, root canal therapy, tooth extraction, or treatment of gum disease. Antibiotics may be required for infections.

Prevention focuses on good oral hygiene, fluoride use, a balanced diet, and regular dental check-ups. Seek urgent care for severe, increasing pain, swelling, fever, or trouble breathing or swallowing.
