Tannprotese is a dental prosthesis designed to replace missing teeth and surrounding oral tissues. It aims to restore chewing function, enable clear speech, and improve facial aesthetics. Prostheses may be removable or fixed and can be supported by natural teeth, dental implants, or both.

Removable prostheses include complete dentures for an entire dental arch and partial dentures for some remaining teeth. Fixed prostheses are intended to stay in place and include crowns that cover damaged teeth and bridges that span gaps. Implant-supported restorations are fixed or semi-fixed, anchored to dental implants.

Materials vary by type and function. Denture bases are often acrylic resin, with teeth that may be acrylic or porcelain. Fixed crowns and bridges use metal alloys, ceramic, or zirconia. Implant components are typically titanium or zirconia. Design priorities include fit, stability, aesthetics, and even load distribution to protect surrounding tissues and opposing teeth.

Planning and fabrication involve clinical examination, imaging, bite registration, impressions, and a trial stage for fixed prostheses. For dentures, a wax try-in may be used to verify aesthetics and bite before final processing. After placement, adjustments are common to ensure comfort and proper function.

Care and lifespan: Prostheses require daily cleaning and routine dental checkups. Dentures may need relining or replacement every several years. Fixed restorations can last longer with good oral hygiene, often a decade or more. Implants, when maintained, offer durable options but may require ongoing monitoring for tissue health and screw stability.
