talpfák

Talpfák is a taxon used in fantasy ecology to refer to a group of large, long-lived trees native to temperate forests of the fictional world of Eldoria. The name derives from talp, a word meaning "sole" in several in-world languages, and fa, meaning "tree," a reference to the tree’s distinctive broad bases.

Description: Most talpfák grow 25–40 meters tall with a stout trunk and a wide, umbrella-like crown. The bark is pale and smooth to lightly fissured. A notable feature is a broad root mat at the base, which anchors the tree in shallow soils. Leaves are deciduous, simple, and often lobed. Fruits are winged samaras released in late summer.

Ecology and habitat: Talpfák favor well-drained soils in cool temperate forests, frequently along streams and on slopes. They form ectomycorrhizal associations and contribute substantial leaf litter that supports understory biodiversity.
