taikuus

Taikuus is a Finnish word that denotes magic or magical power. Etymologically, it combines taika, meaning magic or charm, with the suffix -us to indicate a state or quality. In everyday Finnish, taikuus can refer to both supernatural effects and the sense of wonder associated with magical phenomena.

In Finnish folklore, taikuus is closely linked to figures such as noita (witch) and tietäjä (shaman or wise performer of spells). Traditional practices often encompassed healing charms, weather or harvest spells, divination, and enchantments, with knowledge transmitted within families or communities and varying by region. Magical power was sometimes believed to reside in songs, objects, or certain people who could invoke it through ritual speech, rhythm, or ritual acts.

Historical development saw a shift from widespread folk beliefs to increasing secularization during Christianization and modernization. Despite this, elements of taikuus persisted in fairy tales, ballads, and popular storytelling, evolving rather than disappearing. In contemporary Finland, taikuus is commonly used in literature, film, and media to describe fictional magic or fantastical abilities, as well as the craft of magicians and stage illusions (taikuri and taikatemppu, respectively).
