Tab stops are predefined horizontal positions on a line that determine where the cursor advances when the tab key is pressed. They enable quick alignment of text into columns and are a standard feature in word processors and typesetting systems.

There are several kinds of tab stops: left-aligned, right-aligned, centered, decimal, and bar tabs. A left-aligned tab stops start text at the stop and extend to the right. A right-aligned tab stop ends text at the stop. A centered tab stop places text symmetrically around the stop. A decimal tab stop aligns numbers by their decimal point. Bar tabs draw a vertical rule at the stop. Leaders, such as dots or dashes, can fill the space between text and the stop to guide the reader.

Tabs are used to create columns within a single line, align numbers or headings, and create simple form-like layouts without full tables. They help keep consistent spacing and improve readability.

Implementation varies by software. In word processors, tab stops are configured via the document ruler or a tab settings dialog, and multiple stops can be placed on a single line. Pressing Tab moves the cursor to the next stop. In plain text or programming editors, a tab character (ASCII 9) is inserted, and its rendered width depends on the editor’s tab width (commonly 4 or 8 spaces); many editors can convert tabs to spaces for consistent rendering.

Historically, tab stops evolved from mechanical tabulation and typewriter design and were carried into digital word processing. While they remain convenient for quick alignment, complex layouts are often better handled with tables or advanced formatting to ensure consistent rendering across platforms. They also have accessibility implications when misused in assistive technologies.
