Tab-and-slot (often written tab and slot) refers to a joining technique in which a protruding tab on one component fits into a corresponding slot on another component to locate and join parts. The method is widely used in woodworking, plastics fabrication, metalworking, and kit manufacturing. Tabs and slots provide self-alignment and can enable quick assembly without fasteners, though they are frequently used with adhesive or additional mechanical fasteners to improve strength.

Tolerances are critical: slots should be slightly larger than tabs to allow assembly while maintaining a snug fit. Material properties, such as rigidity and surface finish, influence joint performance and longevity.

Applications span furniture, cabinetry, display enclosures, packaging inserts, model kits, and various consumer products that benefit from easy assembly and precise alignment. Design considerations include adding chamfers or rounded edges to ease insertion, ensuring compatible materials, and using adhesives or fasteners when required for higher load-bearing applications.
