Süsteemitarkvara, or system software, refers to computer programs that are designed to run and manage computer hardware and provide a platform for application software to run. It acts as an intermediary between the user, the applications, and the computer's hardware. Without system software, a computer would be unable to function.

The most common and fundamental type of system software is the operating system (OS). Examples of operating systems include Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. The operating system handles essential tasks such as memory management, process scheduling, file system management, and input/output operations. It provides a user interface, allowing users to interact with the computer and launch applications.

Other categories of system software include device drivers, which enable the operating system to communicate with specific hardware components like printers or graphics cards. Utility programs are also considered system software; these are designed to perform maintenance and management tasks, such as disk defragmentation, antivirus scanning, and file compression. Firmware, embedded directly into hardware devices, is another form of system software that controls the basic functions of a device.

System software is crucial for the operation of any computing device, from personal computers and smartphones to servers and embedded systems. It forms the foundation upon which all other software operates, ensuring that hardware resources are utilized efficiently and that applications can run smoothly.
