Süsinikteras, often referred to as carbon steel, is a metal alloy composed primarily of iron and carbon. The carbon content is a critical factor determining its properties, typically ranging from 0.02% to 2.1% by weight. As the carbon content increases, the steel generally becomes harder and stronger, but also more brittle. Other alloying elements are usually present in smaller amounts, such as manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon, but these are generally considered impurities or are present in quantities that do not significantly alter the steel's classification as carbon steel.

The properties of carbon steel make it suitable for a wide range of applications. Low-carbon steels, with less than 0.3% carbon, are ductile and easily formed, making them ideal for things like car bodies, pipes, and structural components. Medium-carbon steels, typically containing between 0.3% and 0.6% carbon, offer a good balance of strength and ductility and can be heat-treated to improve their mechanical properties, finding use in gears, axles, and railway tracks. High-carbon steels, with more than 0.6% carbon, are very hard and strong, but less ductile, and are used for tools, springs, and high-strength wires.

Carbon steel is widely produced and relatively inexpensive compared to many other types of steel. Its versatility and cost-effectiveness have made it a foundational material in numerous industries, from construction and manufacturing to automotive and toolmaking. It is susceptible to rust and corrosion, often requiring protective coatings like paint or plating for outdoor or corrosive environments.
