For example, a person with grapheme-color synesthesia might see the letter 'A' as red or the number '7' as blue. This is not a learned association, but a direct and consistent blending of sensory input. The word "synesthesia" comes from the Greek words "syn" meaning "together" and "aisthesis" meaning "sensation."

There are many different types of synesthesia, affecting various senses and cognitive processes. Common forms include chromesthesia (sound-to-color), spatial-sequence synesthesia (numbers or days of the week having specific locations in space), and lexical-gustatory synesthesia (hearing words and tasting something).
