Säätötekniikoita, also known as control engineering or control systems, is a branch of engineering that deals with the behavior of dynamical systems. Its primary goal is to modify the behavior of a system by manipulating its inputs to achieve a desired output. This is accomplished through the design and implementation of controllers, which are devices or algorithms that monitor a system's output and adjust its inputs accordingly.

The fundamental concept involves a feedback loop. A sensor measures the system's current state or output, which is then compared to a desired setpoint or reference. The difference between these two values, known as the error signal, is fed into the controller. The controller then processes this error signal and generates a control signal that is applied to the system's actuators, which in turn influence the system's behavior to reduce the error.

Various types of controllers exist, with the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller being one of the most common and widely used. Other techniques include state-space control, model predictive control, and adaptive control, each suited to different applications and system complexities.
