Sähköpurkausporaus, often referred to as EDM drilling or electrical discharge machining drilling, is a non-contact machining process that utilizes electrical sparks to remove material and create holes in electrically conductive materials. This method is particularly effective for drilling very hard or brittle materials that are difficult to machine with conventional methods.

The process involves a rotating electrode, typically a hollow tube made of brass or copper, which acts as one electrode. The workpiece, also electrically conductive, serves as the other electrode. A dielectric fluid, such as deionized water or oil, is flushed through the hollow electrode and around the workpiece. This fluid acts as an insulator until a sufficient voltage difference between the electrode and workpiece causes the fluid to break down, creating a localized electrical spark.

Each spark generates intense heat, vaporizing a small amount of material from both the electrode and the workpiece. The continuous succession of these sparks, controlled by precise voltage and pulse duration, erodes the workpiece, forming a hole. The dielectric fluid simultaneously cools the area and flushes away the eroded particles.

EDM drilling is known for its ability to produce small-diameter holes, deep holes, and holes at precise angles, often with minimal burring or thermal damage to the surrounding material. It is widely used in industries such as aerospace, medical device manufacturing, and tool and die making for applications requiring intricate and accurate drilling.
