Szürkehályog, or cataract, is a clouding of the natural lens of the eye that obstructs clear vision. This condition is a leading cause of visual impairment worldwide, particularly among older adults. The lens, normally clear and transparent, gradually becomes opaque, scattering light and preventing it from focusing properly on the retina. This results in blurry, hazy, or dim vision, often described as looking through a foggy window. Colors may appear faded, and individuals may experience increased sensitivity to glare, especially from headlights at night.

The development of cataracts is primarily associated with aging. As people get older, the proteins within the lens can break down and clump together, causing the clouding. Other contributing factors include prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight, diabetes, certain medications like corticosteroids, eye injuries, and a family history of cataracts. Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption have also been linked to an increased risk.

Diagnosing cataracts typically involves a comprehensive eye examination by an ophthalmologist. This includes vision tests and an examination of the lens using a slit lamp. In the early stages, stronger eyeglasses or brighter lighting may be sufficient to manage symptoms. However, as the cataract progresses and significantly impacts vision, surgical intervention becomes the most effective treatment. Cataract surgery involves removing the clouded natural lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). This is generally a safe and highly successful procedure that can restore clear vision.
