Szklerenchíma is a type of plant tissue that provides structural support and strength. It is one of the two principal types of supportive tissues in plants, the other being collenchyma. Szklerenchíma cells are characterized by having thick, lignified secondary cell walls, which makes them rigid and strong. Lignification is the process by which a plant cell wall is strengthened by the deposition of lignin, a complex polymer.

There are two main types of szklerenchíma cells: fibers and sclereids. Fibers are typically long, slender cells that are often found in bundles. They contribute significantly to the tensile strength of plant organs like stems and roots. Sclereids, on the other hand, are more varied in shape and size, often appearing as irregular masses. They are commonly found in seed coats, nutshells, and the gritty tissues of fruits like pears, contributing to hardness and protection.

Szklerenchíma tissue is a dead tissue at maturity, meaning the living protoplast within the cell has died, leaving behind the robust cell wall. This structural integrity is crucial for plants, allowing them to withstand mechanical stress, wind, and the weight of their own growth. The presence of szklerenchíma also contributes to the texture of plant materials, such as the hardness of wood or the grittiness of certain fruits.
