A stencil is created on the mesh, and ink is forced through the open areas of the stencil onto a substrate during the squeegee stroke. This process can be used to print on a wide variety of materials, including textiles, paper, plastics, glass, and metal.

The basic principle of szitanyomtatás involves stretching a mesh screen over a frame. A stencil is then created on this mesh, either by blocking off certain areas of the mesh with an impermeable material or by creating a pattern of open areas. Ink is then applied to one side of the screen, and a squeegee is used to push the ink across the screen. The ink passes through the open areas of the stencil and onto the material below.
