Szikragyújtás is a Hungarian term that translates to "spark ignition" in English. It refers to a method of igniting a fuel-air mixture, commonly used in internal combustion engines. This process relies on an electric spark to initiate combustion.

In a typical spark ignition system, an electrical current is passed through a high-voltage transformer, often called a coil. This coil dramatically increases the voltage of the electricity. This high-voltage current is then sent to a spark plug, which is positioned within the combustion chamber of the engine. The spark plug has two electrodes separated by a small gap. When the high voltage reaches the spark plug, it forces electricity to jump across this gap, creating a visible spark.

This spark ignites the compressed fuel-air mixture in the cylinder. The rapid combustion of this mixture generates a significant amount of heat and pressure, which expands and pushes a piston, thereby generating mechanical power. The timing of the spark is crucial for efficient engine operation and is precisely controlled by the engine's control unit. Variations of spark ignition exist, including older systems using distributors and modern systems using electronic ignition.
