Szájhigiénia refers to the practice of maintaining cleanliness and health within the mouth. This encompasses the teeth, gums, and tongue. The primary goal of szájhigiénia is to prevent oral diseases such as cavities, gum disease, and bad breath.

Consistent and proper oral hygiene is crucial. This typically involves regular brushing of the teeth at least twice a day, ideally after meals, using a fluoride toothpaste. Brushing removes plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that can lead to tooth decay and gum inflammation. Brushing should cover all surfaces of the teeth, including the inner, outer, and chewing surfaces, as well as the gum line.

Flossing, or using interdental cleaners, is another essential component. Brushing alone cannot reach the spaces between teeth, where food particles and plaque can accumulate. Flossing helps to remove these, thus preventing interdental cavities and gum disease.

Tongue cleaning is also part of good szájhigiénia. The tongue can harbor bacteria that contribute to bad breath and can affect the overall oral environment. A tongue scraper or the back of a toothbrush can be used for this purpose.

Regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings are vital. Dentists can identify early signs of oral health problems that may not be apparent to the individual and can perform thorough cleaning to remove hardened plaque (tartar) that cannot be removed by daily brushing and flossing. Dietary choices also play a role, with limiting sugary foods and drinks being beneficial for oral health.
