syöksyputket

Syöksyputket (singular syöksyputki) are vertical channels on buildings that convey rainwater from roof gutters down to the drainage system or the ground. They form part of a roof drainage system designed to prevent water from running along façades or pooling at the foundation.

Construction and materials: They are typically attached to exterior walls with brackets and hangers. They can be round or square in cross-section and are made from galvanized steel, aluminum, or PVC. Common diameters range from about 75 to 125 millimetres, depending on roof size and rainfall. In modern architecture, visible downpipes are common, but some designs conceal them within walls or integrate them into decorative façades.

Installation and maintenance: Proper installation provides a continuous downward path and appropriate outlets to avoid backflow or leaks. Joints use gaskets or sealant. In cold climates they must withstand freezing and potential ice formation. Maintenance includes clearing leaves and debris, inspecting for corrosion or cracks, and ensuring outlet terminals and drainage lines are clear and connected.

Historical notes: In Nordic countries, including Finland, syöksyputket are common on older brick or stone buildings, often made of cast metal with painted finishes. Contemporary systems may use slimmer profiles or concealed solutions to preserve the exterior design.
